Day one
The first day of reading cloth class was really a good experience,
I dint actually know what the class was all about apart from it being a textile
class, this class took me to another level of looking at textiles, when rakhi
actually questioned us about things like when did the first fabric come into existence,
we went into history of how our ancestors looked at cloth and the different
kind of material they used to wear. We read about Adolf Loos “Ornament and Crime” 1908 were in she made us
understand what the writer was trying to say in his article and visualize it in
our day-to-day lives.
In this article the writer is referring about from were did
the first ornament come from? The cross, its origin and now what the symbol is
used for and he also is trying to say that ornamentation is useless, (he says
that humanity governs under the slavery of ornament.) he says that if we remove
ornamentation from daily life it will bring joy to us because things will
become simpler but no, it gives rise to sadness of ornament not being produced
.in the past people gave so much of importance to ornamentation that they used
to reject simple products,
But in the present
scenario the state believes that in order to progress culture development it is
important to reintroduce ornamentation.
He disagrees that the argument that ornamentation increases
the pleasure of life or that it increases the beauty of anything, he says that
ornament supporters think that the urge for simplicity is self denial, but
actually If there was no ornament at all men would only need to work four hours
a day, Eliminating ornament reduces working hours and increases wages If there
was no ornament at all men would only need to work four hours a day, And even
after working so long they are not justly paid although ornamentation increases
the price of any object because it increases esthetic value.
He says that those who cannot cope with the present hold the
rate of culture development.
He also states that only shabbily produced ornament is bearable,
and he would be happy if ornament was burnt in a fire. Were as on the other
hand he says that Aristocrats should allow decoration if it gives pleasure to
other humans (carpenter).
I disagree in a way
with the writer because I feel ornamentation is important in a way because it
displays our culture, we could be simple in a way but we should not completely
ignore ornamentation .it is said that ornamentation makes us judge a person,
from what kind of background he or she is coming from but actually if you go to
see if we remove ornamentation will we stop judging people? Even if we all wear
simple clothes then we will start judging people by their faces even after we
live in a democratic country so I don’t see the need of discarding ornamentation completely.
