"THE LANGUAGE OF CLOTH"

Reading cloth, the name drive me towards this course.I wanted this course because I thought it will all be about the process of developing a cloth but then as Rakhi told this course will be reaching more towards the history part than the process.
The 1st lecture was very much informative and I got to learn many new concepts and thoughts. The act of Ornamentation has been seen through different meanings by "Adolf Loos".He has tried to show us appropriate meaning of word Ornamentation. The act of ornamentation can be different for each and every person. For some it might be just the print of the fabric and for some it might not be the same.Loos explains his philosophy, describing how ornamentation can have the effect of causing objects to go out of style and thus become obsolete.Loos introduced a sense of the "immorality" of ornament, describing it as "degenerate", its suppression as necessary for regulating modern society.
Yinka Shonibare's work shows his deep understanding of two different cultures, his use of highly colored fabrics and different types of motifs is what he is known for.I was motivated by his works, the way he has used patterns in every fabric and the colors he used.

The Jacquard loom was 1st demonstrated in 1801.It is the loom which has channels. The loom was controlled by "chain of cards" .This loom was designed to create complex designs such as brocade, damask and matelasse.
Inida is a country of diversity, this diversity gave rise to many types of fabrics, textiles and prints too eg: Tye and Dye,Madhubani art,Kalamkari ,Bandhani art etc.

I think reading cloth is very necessary to know the weave ,the entangled threads which gives it it's identity. The most important thing that I got is I need to know the past of the cloth, the history to know its true meaning.I think this class is the only in which I will really get a sense of textiles by knowing the history behind it.
