Threads of Art

The documentary Threads of Art by Yinka Shonibare displays his textile sculptural work showing the dual identities of himself and his understandings of two different cultures --African/British. "I think it's the way I view this culture and its contrast --in an artificial construct."
Yinka looks to blend and join together different styles to create art that questions the two prominent cultures. Focusing on dual cultural background and how it reflects on his art work. Yinka also believes in the force and power that patterns and textures acquire. He thinks that it facilities and speaks a lot by itself; leaving the gap for personal interpretation.

The colours and the surface used by Yinka are a result of the strong African culture where he comes from; the Batik which has been used as a medium of work.

Arts and Crafts

William Morris inspired by the writings of John Ruskin lead the Arts and crafts international design movement.. This was mainly for traditional craftsman’s to use simplified forms and means of decoration. It was a simple style without unnecessary decoration. The movement was a result touching the state of impoverished decorative arts. The Arts and crafts movement was revolt against the industrial revolution which was overpowering the crafts and their craftsmanship.
