Ornament and crime is a correlation between the present and the past."Ornament" has been portrayed to be highly diverse and cotrastive.
Ornamentation is something that changes over and over again with time .The controversy starts with the ornament artist voicing their opinions about how the consumer loves this change in ornamentation  and how the modern man believes and visualizes loss to the consumer.
Today  tattoos , paintings , symbols ,graffiti s etc are considered immoral , unnecessary and very low priced.Vandalism today is one of the issues we are juggling with. Ornamentation is considered to be provoking for the economic society as well.
The modern world today practices simplicity and the practitioner is considered to be opulent.Cultured and well bred people appreciate simplicity and prefer living on those lines.
The modern man believes that removal of ornament has taken things to the next level, thus giving it more strength and richness. The ornamental artists are considered to be impoverished.Lack of ornamentation is today considered to be a sign of intellectual power.
The main focal point today is no longer ornamentation. It has shifted to simplicity.
I personally do not agree to this completely. Yes , the world has moved on and so has the style and the fashion but i believe there are some masterpieces using  ornaments that still remain important and precious. The time spent by an ornamental virtuoso on his work is  ponderous but in  the  end its the modern man taking  it all.No matter how hard we try to eradicate the fact that ornamentation is no more a part of our livelihood, it still exists in a very bizarre form.We might not be the reason for this ornamentation , but it still exists.Everything around is ornamentation and so is simplicity in its own way.Nature could be tagged as an artist for the existing ornamentation around us,.Some humanistic ornamentation will always remain. What we see today is simplicity to us.It might just be ornamentation to someone else.

Threads of art : yinka shonibare

This was a short documentary made on the use of batik fabric by artist yinka shonibare in his sculptural work.Through his work the artist is trying to use textile as a link between cultures and sub cultures. He believes authenticity is something that one creates. The artist looks at combining and integrating different styles to create art that questions the boundaries of cultures. This documentary highly focuses on bi cultural upbringing and how it reflects on an individuals art work. The colors and the textures used by shonibare are a result of the African culture he grew up within.Textile has been used as a medium of language by shonibare. He has drawn inferences  that the form and structure of a certain piece of textile can  have its roots from the opposite world.
Shonibare also believes in the strength which the patterns and textures possess. He believes that these patterns and textures have the capability to communicate a lot.Hes tried to make connections between cultures and history using textile as a medium.
Shonibare prefers keeping his work open for interpretation to open up the unique perspectives of the audience.
