Documentaries are meant to create an impact and inform
people about something which is not known to the masses , India has a lot such
hidden stories which needs to be extracted from the core in order to bring it
to the light. Every state here has so much to show and so much to learn from
that there could be possibly hundreds of documentaries which could be created.
The informative about the entire state of Gujarat brought up some aspects of
it. The particular documentary we saw was mainly
based in the ‘Kutch’ region of Gujarat focusing on the rabari tribe.
Handicraft plays a very important role in that part of Gujarat
as the daily job of a woman is to do embroidery for pass time and also as the
tradition goes the women makes pieces of decoration and also clothes out of the
embroidery done by them in order take it to their husbands house after
marriage. As it was shown in the documentary girls of
nearly 3 or 4 years start sewing and learning how to embroider to keep up the
tradition coming down since generations however now few women in the tribe have
started to refrain from this tradition as they feel that their daughters should
be given proper education also and not just learn how to embroider and sew. Looking
into the art aspect of that place apart from embroidery we also have the ajrak
done by a specific Muslim ethnic group such as the ahirs and the mutuvas. The
craftsmen who make Ajrak are called Khatri. The entire process of using several
blocks with each block by intricacy and delicacy is just magnificent. The
blocks are made out of wood and are of two kinds of wood such as shisham and
teak. In the ajrak style of printing the colour indigo and the color red play a
very important role they mostly use the indigo plant as their source which adds
to the cloth by giving it an essence of the natural dye. The authentic Ajrak is
printed on both sides by a method known as resist printing.
Carpets also form an eminent part of textile community. The
authentic hand woven carpets are highly intricate and beautiful in nature which
adds glamour to which ever space they are put in. I guess there is a lot
difference as to how people in the west look at things and how people in the
east do. As because the way we relate to motifs to mythological characters and
godly figures at the same time they would maybe look at it as the solar system
or perceive and relate it to concept of heaven and hell. There were a lot of
things which I found out through the presentation on carpet weaving about the
different areas the carpets are made in and also how the choice of motifs is
totally different in all areas and also the use of colour in each carpet.
